Figma for Web Design: Why Designers Have Made It Their Go-To Tool

A few years ago, the web design workflow looked like this: Photoshop for visual design, separate tools for prototyping, email chains for sharing designs with clients, and manual handoff to developers. It was slow and prone to miscommunication.

Figma changed all of that. It is now the industry standard for web and app design, used by teams at Google, Microsoft, Airbnb, and thousands of agencies worldwide.

What Figma Actually Does

Figma is a browser-based design tool that handles everything from wireframes to high-fidelity mockups to interactive prototypes. The browser-based part matters: everyone on a project sees the same file, in real time, without needing to send updated versions back and forth.

A designer can create a website design in Figma, the client can leave comments directly on the design, and the developer can inspect exact measurements, colours, and assets — all in the same file, without any exports or back-and-forth.

Features That Make It Powerful

Components: Design a button once, and reuse it everywhere in your file. Change the component once, and it updates everywhere. This is how consistent design systems are built and maintained.

Auto Layout: Elements resize and reflow automatically as content changes. This makes designing responsive layouts — where content needs to work at different screen widths — dramatically faster.

Prototyping: Link screens together and create interactive prototypes that click through like a real website. Clients can experience the flow of a design before a single line of code is written.

Plugins: The Figma plugin ecosystem is enormous — tools for generating placeholder content, running accessibility checks, exporting to code, and hundreds of other shortcuts.

Is Figma Free?

Figma has a free plan that allows 3 active projects and unlimited personal files. For professional work, the paid plans start at around $12 per editor per month. Most freelancers and small teams find the free plan adequate for individual client projects.

What This Means If You Are a Business Owner

If you are hiring a web designer or agency, Figma means you can review your website design in detail before any code is written. You click through the prototype, leave comments on specific elements, and see exactly what you are getting. This dramatically reduces the chance of expensive surprises after development starts.

When briefing a designer, asking "will you share the Figma file?" is a reasonable question that any modern web designer should say yes to.

At Zusta, we use Figma for all our web design projects and share prototypes with clients before development. Talk to us about your next website.
